East Coast Road (ECR), built along the coast of the Bay of Bengal connecting Tamil Nadu’s state capital city Chennai with Kanyakumari via Pondicherry, Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Sirkali, Thirukkadaiyur, Tharangambadi, Karaikal, Nagore, Nagapattinam, Thiruthuraipoondi,
Muthupet, Adirampattinam, Pattukkottai Manora, Manamelkudi, Mimisal, Ramanathapuram, Koodankulam, Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur, Kudankulam. The total length of the road is about 777 km between Chennai and Kanyakumari.
ECR once existed from chennai to puducherry, later it has been extended to cuddalore and then to nagapattinam and then Tuticorin via Ramanathapuram and finally up to kanyakumari.
The highway is a state highway maintained by the Government of Tamil Nadu under the Department of Highways and Minor Ports and Tamil Nadu Road Infrastructure Development Corporation (TNRIDC). Neelangarai (literally “blue shore”) is a census town and is a locality in the south of Chennai. it is situated in Chennai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu about seven kilometers south of Adyar, Chennai. The former name of the city was Thiruneelakandapuram, named after the Thiruneelakandeshwarar temple. Neelankarai is located with Palavakkam in the north, Vettuvankeni in the south, Thoraipakkam in the west and the Bay of Bengal in the east. Over the years Neelankarai has developed tremendously and has made a significant name for itself in popularity for various reasons.
